I grew up in Chicago my entire life, but for the longest time, I didn’t appreciate the beauty of it. To me, it was just home—nothing special. But after living in Dallas for over a decade, my perspective on Chicago began to change. I realized that every time I went back to visit family and friends, I was dreading the trip. Instead of seeing the city as a place full of memories and vibrancy, I saw it as a hassle—cold weather, traffic, and all the things I didn’t miss about living there.
Recently, I decided to shift my perspective. If I was going to Chicago, I wasn’t going to let my time there be filled with complaints. I would intentionally look for the beauty of the city. Now, whenever I visit, I make it a point to take in the things I ignored for so long. I’ve gone on a cruise around the Riverwalk, explored tourist attractions like Navy Pier and the Bean, and, of course, indulged in all the incredible food the city has to offer. This small decision has made a huge difference. Chicago hasn’t changed, but my perspective has. I’ve started to see the beauty that was always there—things I ignored for so long simply because I wasn’t looking for them.
Maybe it’s time for you to shift your perspective on some things too. Are you so busy looking at what’s wrong with your life that you’re missing what’s going well? It’s easy to get caught up in the disappointments and frustrations of life—deals that didn’t work out, challenging clients, slow seasons—and forget just how much God has blessed you.
The Bible reminds us, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8). Shifting your perspective doesn’t mean ignoring the challenges, but it does mean choosing to focus on what’s good, true, and lovely in your life.
Take a moment today to reflect on the blessings you may have been overlooking. Maybe it’s the clients who trust you, the support of your family, or even the small wins in your business. A fresh perspective doesn’t change your circumstances, but it can change how you see them—and that changes everything.
